Long before NASCAR racers turned right and left on road courses at Watkins Glen and Sears Point, the series raced at Riverside International Raceway in southern California. Riverside was a road-racing mecca until it closed in 1989. Riverside was also the only track in a western state that NASCAR visited until Ontario Motor Speedway, also in California, opened in 1970. (Ontario closed in 1980).

Getting on track has just become harder for NASCAR Nextel Cup champions. The series announced Wednesday that it would limit the champion’s provisional to six races starting this season. The provisional allows the most recent champion who hasn’t qualified by time or through owner’s points to take the 43rd and final starting position.

CONCORD, N.C. - NASCAR changed its Nextel Cup past champions provisional today, limiting it to only six uses per season. The limit also applies to the entire team so that a car owner can’t use multiple past champions in the course of one season.

A Roush Racing car hauler crashed into a motor home, setting off a chain-reaction accident involving other vehicles on a far West Texas highway Wednesday. The hauler, carrying two Nextel Cup race cars, crashed along eastbound Interstate 10 near a U.S. Border Patrol highway checkpoint west of Sierra Blanca. A Roush Racing car hauler crashed into a motor home, setting off a chain-reaction accident involving other vehicles on a West Texas highway Wednesday. The hauler, carrying two Nextel Cup race cars, crashed along eastbound Interstate 10 near a U.S. Border Patrol highway checkpoint west of Sierra Blanca.

NASCAR changed its Nextel Cup past champions provisional Wednesday to limit it to only six uses per season. There had previously been no limit to how many times a past Cup champion could use the provisional to ensure a spot in the field each week.
