Long before NASCAR racers turned right and left on road courses at Watkins Glen and Sears Point, the series raced at Riverside International Raceway in southern California. Riverside was a road-racing mecca until it closed in 1989. Riverside was also the only track in a western state that NASCAR visited until Ontario Motor Speedway, also in California, opened in 1970. Getting on track has just become harder for NASCAR Nextel Cup champions. The series announced Wednesday that it would limit the champion’s provisional to six races starting this season. The provisional allows the most recent champion who hasn’t qualified by time or through owner’s points to take the 43rd and final starting position.
