FORT WORTH, Texas — Taking risks is a whole lot easier when you believe you don’t have much to lose. Carl Edwards squeezed a victory out of his last tank of gas, racing the last 69 laps of Sunday’s Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway without pitting.

Several years ago, we attended a NASCAR race at Phoenix International Raceway and an old friend and mentor from Yuma drove up to join us there. We planned to park at the park-and-ride at Cricket Pavilion and he asked whether he ought to do the same thing.
