Been awhile since I’ve checked in with a column and I thought it might be a good idea to catch the faithful NASCAR fans of Cleveland County up on what’s been going on in the drama filled world of auto racing.

SPARTA, Ky. — Speedway Motorsports Inc. purchased Kentucky Speedway, clearing the way for SMI owner Bruton Smith to try and bring a coveted NASCAR Sprint Cup race to the 1.5-mile tri-oval in northern Kentucky.

As 2008 comes to an end, so will the Petty Enterprises that NASCAR fans and racers came to admire. Multiple sources have confirmed that after 60 seasons of stock car racing and 10 championships, America’s first family of stock car racing will shut its doors and merge with the team currently known as Gillett Evernham Motorsports.
